Greenbelt National Park | Hike

November 7, 2020

November 7th started the Hokie Hike 2020 Virtual Challenge. The boys were staying with their grandparents, so Linda and I decided we should go and hit a trail nearby and get ourselves and Heidi some exercise. We used to walk Greenbelt all the time, and we thought due to the pandemic it was closed. This was only partially true, as it was closed due to road resurfacing. The result means that you need to park across the street at the TGIFridays or in the business park.

This park has always been a unique park to me. It is situated in a busy suburban area, complete with nearby apartment buildings, and borders a major highway and parkway. It seems to be somewhat of an oasis and offers hikes and camping. We have always used it as our go-to as getting into the woods quickly. Our biggest complaint is typically the ticks, as it has its fair share for sure.

We decided to hike the perimeter trail, which is listed as a 5.2 mile hike, but with the additional walk to the park, it becomes closer to 6 miles. My Strava had an issue during the hike and didn’t record the whole trail, but we did do a recording on AllTrails. It was a nice fall day, still warm enough to build up a sweat, but cool enough to still wear pants and a long sleeve. Though Linda mentioned she wished she had worn shorts that day.

We finished the hike.

The park was it’s normal self, lots of deadfall and pretty quiet. Some leaves were starting their change into fall colors, while others were already littering the ground. During the hike, we saw some of the resurfacing and looks like quite the undertaking and are looking forward to the finished product. It was a nice hike, great to get away just the two of us, and go at our normal pace.

Stats
